Choosing Between Them
Start with the service environment.
If the part will spend meaningful time outdoors, ASA is generally the better starting point. For protected or indoor parts, ABS can be a practical choice when UV and weather resistance are not required.
| Consideration | ASA | ABS |
| Best fit | Outdoor and weather-exposed functional parts. | Protected or indoor functional parts. |
| UV & weather resistance | Excellent and a defining strength of the material. | More limited; prolonged outdoor exposure can lead to discoloration and property loss. |
| Heat performance | Suitable for many warm-service functional applications; exact limits depend on grade. | Also suitable for many warm-service functional applications; exact limits depend on grade. |
| Toughness & impact | Strong balance of toughness and durability. | Strong impact performance and a long record in functional applications. |
| Printing environment | An enclosure and stable ambient conditions are strongly recommended. | An enclosure and stable ambient conditions are strongly recommended. |
