Choose ASA when outdoor exposure is expected
ASA uses an acrylate rubber phase that gives the material much better resistance to UV exposure and weathering than ABS. That makes it the stronger default for outdoor brackets, vehicle projects, garden components, signs and other parts expected to live in sunlight.
Choose ABS when weatherability is not needed
ABS remains a cost-effective choice for protected or indoor functional parts that benefit from toughness and heat resistance. It is widely used for prototypes, brackets, workshop components, housings and replacement parts.
Do not choose by material name alone
Mechanical and thermal properties vary by formulation. A high-performance ABS grade can outperform a basic ASA grade in a specific property, and vice versa. For demanding applications, compare the technical data sheets for the actual filaments being considered.
Both require process control
ASA and ABS both shrink during cooling and generally benefit from an enclosure, stable ambient temperature, strong first-layer adhesion and controlled part cooling. Neither should be treated like PLA with a hotter nozzle.
